Consultation underway for new homes in Kendal

September 2014

Kendal residents are being asked to comment on proposals for new houses in the town.

Story Homes is proposing to submit a planning application for up to 115 new homes on land at Kendal Parks Farm, an area already allocated for housing by South Lakeland District Council.

The houses, 35% of which will be classed as ‘affordable’, would help the local authority to meet their housing target, with a predicted 8,800 new homes required by 2025. Forty of the homes would be available for local people to rent or buy at a reduced market rate, providing a much needed boost to the affordable market in Kendal.

The scheme would have benefits for the local economy during the construction phase as a result of direct and indirect employment opportunities through the sub-contractor and supply chains, as well as an increased demand for local services when the new houses are occupied. The development would attract a New Homes Bonus payment of around £1 million over a six-year period on top of extra revenue for South Lakeland District Council via increased Council Tax receipts.

If the development is approved, it would also deliver green public spaces and enhance existing provision and would be designed to protect the views of neighbouring properties.

David Hayward, Development Planner for Story Homes said: “The consultation is an opportunity for the residents of Kendal to comment and provide feedback about our plans. The land at Kendal Parks Farm has already been allocated for residential development by South Lakeland District Council and we hope to deliver the best possible housing solution here.

“We believe that the Story Homes product is appropriate for this site due to the high quality of our houses and also our dedication to building developments which complement the local area, through thoughtful planning and design.”

Following the consultation, which will include distributed leaflets and a dedicated website, Story Homes plans to submit an outline planning application to the Council. It is hoped that the Council will approve the principal of development on the site and a full and detailed planning application can then be produced.

Story Homes is a family grown Cumbrian housing developer with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. Story Homes recently launched their first ever development in South Lakeland; The Beeches off Natland Road in Kendal. The development has proved so popular that one customer queued outside for more than 20 hours to secure her dream Story Home.
