I work in the Technical department and we are in charge of overseeing all technical aspects of the company. Our jobs vary from day-to-day; they can involve issuing drawings, applying for services and designing drawings on Computer Aided Design (CAD). We make sure the Production team has all of the information they need to construct a site and we help to solve any problems or queries they may have throughout the process.
I help the team in a variety of different ways. This can involve drawing the less complex sketches on CAD, implementing drawing amendments and assisting with other jobs that the team may have. I also frequently visit sites to pass on information and new drawings.
I really like the variety. The CAD work is great fun and designing drawings has always been an interest of mine. I really enjoy seeing how much I’ve already progressed and developed since starting my apprenticeship. Every day I gain more responsibility and to do more complicated tasks.
I went through school focusing on design and engineering and I worked previously as a marine engineer. I decided that job was not for me so I tried to find something that was based nearer home and that had a high dependence on CAD work. That is when I found the Story Homes Technical apprenticeship and I haven’t looked back since.
I did a BTEC diploma in engineering alongside my GCSEs and followed these up with A-levels in ICT, physics, maths and design technology/systems and control.
My advice would be to try to gain as much experience in CAD work as possible. It is very important in roles like mine so knowing the basics will give you a great start. It is also a good idea to try to keep up-to-date with industry news and learn about the latest technology related to your desired role.
Studying and college work take up a lot of my time outside of work. However I enjoy going to the gym as much as I can.
