All that glitters

Explore #mystoryhome

One of the best things about Christmas is the opportunity it gives us to gather friends and family around the table for a celebratory feast. If, like us, you favour relaxed dining for the rest of the year, it also provides the perfect excuse to go to town on your festive place settings and add a little glitz and glamour to the occasion.

It helps to start with a decorative theme but whether you opt for traditional charm or go all out on shimmering metallics, make sure you have fun!

Old spice

If you love the rich deep colours of traditional Victorian Christmas decorations, why not extend the theme by incorporating the rich jewel colours of India? John Lewis has a gorgeous selection of baubles and table decorations in its Tales of the Maharaja collection – this offers a fresh twist on a classic Christmas colour palette.

Northern Lights

Cool, wintery colours evoke the Scandinavian aesthetic for a fabulously frosty dining experience. Set the scene with dazzling white table linen and accessorise with glass jars filled with faux-snow-dredged pine cones, mistletoe fairy lights and white candles. Complete the look with white, soft grey and pale blue china, accompanied by elegant glassware – this champagne set from LSA is elegantly indulgent.

Contemporary classic

Go for a slick, contemporary look by pairing midnight blue, indigo and faded rose with on-trend copper highlights – we love this copper tea light bowl and copper seed pod votives. Mix and match different textures – silk, velvet and linen – and keep accessories soft and subtle, like these tempting moulded wine glasses.

Heavy Metal

Go for gold – or silver – with a full-on luxury-themed table setting that sets the tone for the season’s celebrations. Start with a snowy white cloth and then pile on the glitter. Scatter gold sequins across the table and accessorise with gold-ombre wine glasses and gorgeous lustre baubles. How about giving everyone their own place setting with a golden initial letter from M&S?
