Apprenticeships in Bricklaying

Future Talent

In 2018, we will be looking to recruit three apprentice bricklayers to work alongside two apprentice joiners at one of our quality sites in the North West and Cumbria.

The successful apprentices would be enrolled in our Aspire Apprenticeship scheme which would provide apprentices with a safe yet progressive culture to learn their trade as well as develop skills in communication and teamwork. Supported by a team of dedicated site managers and the CITB, apprentices would be paid to complete their apprenticeship and learn the standards of Story Homes.

With opportunities to learn at our quality sites in the North West  or Cumbria, there has never been a better time to join the Story Homes family.

Vacancy Overview

A bricklayer may perform the following tasks:

  • Work from plans and specifications
  • Seal foundations with damp-resistant materials
  • Spread layers of mortar to serve as a base and binder for bricks, remove excess mortar, and check vertical and horizontal alignment
  • Use various tools and brick-cutting machines to cut and shape bricks
  • Construct arches and ornamental brickwork
  • Repair and maintain clay bricks, cement blocks/bricks and related structures

Qualifications & Training

There are no set qualifications to become an Apprentice Bricklayer with Story Homes but it helps to have GCSEs (A*- C) in Maths and English or equivalent in order to progress on the apprenticeship. We don’t expect apprentices to have worked on a site but we are always keen to hear from those that already have construction site experience, which can be gained by working as a labourer.

Everyone who works on our sites must hold a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or equivalent and must attend and pass all other health and safety tests as part of their role. We support all apprentices with gaining these standards.

We expect you to have:

  • A responsible attitude towards work safety, especially at height
  • A commitment to quality work – shown through your dedication to your apprenticeship and in the work that you do
  • A passion for practical skills
  • The ability to follow specific plans and instructions precisely
  • The ability to work in a well organised and accurate way
  • Good team working skills
  • A commitment to punctuality and self-motivation

The 2018 scheme is now open and the closing date for applications is 11 May 2018
