At Story Homes, we believe that creating a sustainable community is about more than building high-quality homes. It’s about creating places where people can connect, build relationships and feel a sense of belonging.
This summer, Riverbrook Gardens in Alnwick has been a great example of that community spirit, with local families, residents and organisations coming together for two summer BBQs – both supported by Story Homes.
The first event was organised by The Alnwick Garden and Gallery Youth Project, bringing local families together for an afternoon of food, activities and community fun.
Children and grandparents could enjoy planting, crafts and games alongside the BBQ, building on the work of more than a dozen local volunteers who had previously taken part in tree planting over the winter.
Story Homes was pleased to contribute towards the event, helping the organisers provide food and supplies from a local butcher for families to enjoy together.
The second BBQ was organised by the independent ‘Alnwick Riverbrook Gardens Community Group’, a private Facebook group created by residents which now has almost 150 current and future members.
The group helps residents connect, share experiences and offer advice about the development and wider local area, while the BBQ gave neighbours the opportunity to meet in person and enjoy an afternoon together.
We were delighted to contribute towards the event, which was also attended by the Mayor of Alnwick, who commented on the fantastic community spirit on display.
As a development grows, so does the community around it. Events like these provide an opportunity for people to meet their neighbours, make new connections and establish a genuine sense of belonging.
For us, that is an important part of creating sustainable places to live. While sustainability is often associated with energy efficiency, green spaces and biodiversity, social sustainability is just as important.
We’re proud to have supported these two events at Riverbrook Gardens and to have played a small part in bringing residents, families and the wider Alnwick community together.
