Help to Buy gives young farmer a leg up the property ladder

December 2015

Young farmer, David Paterson, age 23 from Biggar wanted to stay close to his friends and family and at the same time get a foot on the property ladder, so when the new Story Homes development on Edinburgh Road opened it provided the perfect solution!

After visiting the marketing suite at Pentland Reach, and hearing about the Help to Buy scheme from Sales Executive, Michelle Beaumont, David was quick to secure one of the ‘Elgin’ house types from the Story Homes range. This three bedroom semi-detached house offers an integrated kitchen and dining room, spacious lounge and three good sized bedrooms as well as secure parking and landscaped gardens. Perfect for a bachelor pad!

David said: “I took advantage of the Help to Buy (Scotland) scheme as otherwise buying my own home would have been out of my reach. Even with a full time job, it’s really hard for first time buyers like me to get on the property ladder so having this additional help was very welcome.

“I work in Lanark which is about 12 miles away from Biggar, and wanted to move out of my parent’s home to give me my own space and independence but not be too far away to pop home to help out on the farm and for a good Sunday lunch!”

David moved in last month and thanks to second hand selling sites like Gumtree, he said that the place is really starting to look like home! “I love everything about Feature - Pentland Reachthe house but the kitchen is probably my favourite room. I got to choose the tiles and finishes to make it look just how I wanted” said David. He’s also looking forward to taking advantage of his lovely garden with some summer barbecues next year.

Buying a brand new home has many benefits, the most appealing for David being that there is no DIY or maintenance to do, it’s more efficient than older properties and therefore his bills will be lower. “What it really means is that my free time is my own as everything has been done for me” explained David.

Michelle said: “With just a 5% deposit and a 20% government grant, you can easily become a homeowner like David has using the Help to Buy scheme at Pentland Reach.

“This high quality, sought after development offers a range of stylish 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedroom properties and are conveniently situated close to all of the amenities that Biggar has to offer including good local schools and transport links; both Edinburgh and Glasgow are easily reached in under an hour.”
