Karen makes use of ‘affordable housing’ to get her first foot on the property ladder

September 2017

British Aerospace electrician Karen has recently moved in to our Brookwood Park development in Kirkham after moving around the country renting!

Karen, a former engineer in the RAF, lived in military accommodation for years before moving to the North West to join BAE in Warton nearly 10 years ago. She was renting a two bedroom house locally and wanted to find a home to settle down in.

The first time buyer didn’t think she would be able to afford a brand new home! Karen looked around Brookwood Park and immediately loved the development as it has so much green space around including a central duck pond plus so much space around the homes.

Story Homes’ independent financial advisor established what she could afford and within days Karen put down her reservation fee and secured her three-bedroom semi-detached home, which she purchased at 80% of the market value. Affordable properties remain as such in perpetuity, and should homeowners wish to sell the property it would be sold at 80% of the market value at that point in time.

Affordable new homes are a very popular option for homebuyers, allowing people who would otherwise be unable to buy a property to enjoy all the benefits of living in a brand new home for a price that fits their means, helping them to get their first foot on the property ladder.

The three-bedroom Rowan has an open plan kitchen/dining room which leads to the patio and rear garden and offers a modern living space. A separate, spacious lounge, and cloakroom complete the ground floor. There are three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor.

Karen said: “I always thought I would be on the rental market as I never dreamed I would be able to afford to buy a home on my own.

“Buying an affordable home was really easy. There is the initial qualifying application process which I completed through Fylde Borough Council. Then it’s exactly the same process as buying a home and there is no difference from mine to any other Story Home. Its built to the same high standards and the quality finish inside is brilliant. I would recommend it.”

“My home is so spacious – from the dining and kitchen area at the back of the house with a separate utility area and downstairs WC to the large living room. I have more than enough room when my family and friends visit. I’ve even decorated one of the bedrooms for my niece for when she stays over too.

“Brookwood Park is a perfect place for me – it’s so peaceful and pretty. I have really enjoyed settling in to my new Story Home and loving my garden.”

We sensitively include affordable housing within new developments to meet local needs as required by local planning policies. In order to be eligible for an affordable home you need to demonstrate in financial terms that you require the discount on the property in order to afford it, and have a local connection.

Interested members of the public can apply through Fylde Borough Council to be assessed for their eligibility. Terms and conditions apply.

Brookwood Park is a stylish mix of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom properties, all finished to a high specification. With 13 different house types on offer there will be a superb collection of apartments, terraced, semi-detached and detached homes, offering up to 1905 sq ft of living space.
