Why we build open plan homes

Lifestyle-led design

Today’s homeowners are looking for homes that can adapt to the way they live, work and spend time together. Open plan living offers the flexibility to support modern lifestyles, whether that’s keeping an eye on children playing in the garden while preparing meals, or creating a welcoming setting for entertaining friends and family. By bringing key living spaces together, our open plan layouts encourage a greater sense of connection and make everyday life feel more sociable and inclusive.

Maximising natural light

Open plan layouts help natural light reach further into the home, creating bright, inviting spaces that feel both spacious and comfortable. By reducing barriers between rooms, light can flow more freely throughout the living areas, enhancing the overall sense of openness. Features such as large windows, bi-fold and French doors further maximise daylight while strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing homeowners to make the most of their surroundings.

When designing our house types we want to create spaces that appeal to modern families. Open plan, flexible layouts with space for a whole family to live comfortably. That’s exactly what we have created with the Story Collection, and we couldn't be more proud.

How we approach open plan design

Design concept

Interior design plays a pivotal role in creating a cohesive and inviting open plan home. Our approach focuses on supporting modern lifestyles, where spaces are designed to adapt to everyday routines. The kitchen/dining/family area has become the true heart of the home, serving as a multifunctional hub that fosters connection and conversation.

Cohesion & flow

A consistent colour palette is essential for creating visual harmony across an open plan layout. Whether introduced through paint colours, upholstery, furnishings or styling, a unified scheme helps spaces feel connected. Soft, earthy tones, such as muted greens and warm neutrals, maintain a timeless aesthetic. These nature-inspired hues also create a seamless transition between indoors and out.

A cohesive interior extends beyond colour and materials; thoughtful layout not only maximises the space but presents the home in a liveable setting to potential buyers, without compromising the overall design aesthetic.

Kitchen Design Focus

Natural materials work beautifully alongside earthy colour palettes, bringing warmth, texture and authenticity to the space. A statement dining table in dark wood can help anchor the room, while statement lighting above creates a focal point that reinforces the dining area as a sociable setting for family entertaining and everyday living.

Lifestyle

An open plan home should feel connected to its outdoor surroundings. Earthy palettes, natural materials, and scenic inspired artwork help the flow between indoors and outdoors, allowing gardens to become natural extensions of living space. Investing in durable outdoor furniture and layering with outdoor rugs, cushions and lanterns can create a comfortable and inviting outdoor nook, perfect for relaxing, alfresco dining and socialising throughout the warmer months.
