Story Homes inspires future sustainable designers at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School

We recently visited St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Workington to deliver an engaging and interactive lesson on sustainability and modern housebuilding to the school’s Year 5 class.

As part of their current studies on renewable energy, pupils welcomed David Brier, Group Designer at Story Homes, who shared insight into how sustainability is shaping the future of the housing industry. The session explored the importance of energy-efficient homes, thoughtful design, and environmentally conscious construction methods.

During the lesson, pupils learned about some of the sustainable features included within modern Story Homes developments, including photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, EV charging points and air source heat pumps, all of which help homeowners reduce energy use and lower carbon emissions.

The session also highlighted our ongoing commitment to sustainability through our Sustainable Story initiative, which focuses on building thoughtfully designed homes and communities while reducing environmental impact and supporting future generations. We are currently building nearby at Foxbridge Rise, where a range of energy-efficient features are being incorporated into new homes.

Following the presentation, pupils took on the role of designers themselves, creating their own sustainable home concepts and floor plans. The interactive activity encouraged creativity while helping children understand how modern homes can be designed with the environment in mind.

The visit was rounded off with a visit from Story Homes’ mascot, Builder Bear, who joined pupils for photographs and helped hand out goodie bags to celebrate the occasion.

David Brier, Group Designer at Story Homes, said:

“It was fantastic to visit St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School and see the enthusiasm the pupils brought to the session. At Story Homes, sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we hope the workshop inspired pupils to think about the role they can play in creating a more sustainable future. The pupils came up with some brilliant ideas for their own sustainable homes, and we hope the session inspired them to think creatively about the future.”

Mia Lobb, teacher at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, added:

“The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Story Homes and found the session both engaging and inspiring. As the class has been learning about renewable energy, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to see how sustainability is applied in real-world industries. We would like to thank Story Homes for delivering such a valuable experience for the children.”

The initiative forms part of our continued commitment to supporting local schools and engaging with communities through educational opportunities that inspire future generations.
