Supporting local residents by improving drainage in south Carlisle

July 2019

In a bid to support local residents in south Carlisle, we have improved the drainage of surface water close to The Ridings in Carlisle.

Before we began developing in the area there were historical flooding issues surrounding Oaklands Drive in south Carlisle, which is a neighbouring street to The Ridings. In December 2017 a number of properties on this street were flooded as the land drain was unable to sustain the high levels of rainfall at the time, due to a lack of maintenance and existing blockages in the pipe.

Whilst we did not own the land on which this land drain was located, we pledged to support local residents to alleviate the risk of future flooding and improve drainage in the local area.

An agreement was made to remove the old drain and to install and maintain a new land drain that could sustain the rainfall and prevent future flooding. We contributed approximately £34,000 towards the cost and installation of this significantly larger drain, which is now in place and is successfully working.

Graham Parker, Head of Design said: “It’s really important to us that we support our local neighbours and ensure the health of safety of our residents too. We ensured that all elements were considered with regards to appropriate drainage for the area and we agreed to pay for the installation of a new land drain which could sustain the surface water requirements.

“We’ve also worked with Newman School who are building a new school near The Ridings to ensure that there will be no excess surface water from this site. The water from the site will drain through our new land drain system.”

We recently launched a new phase of The Ridings development. As per previous phases of the development, drainage for Phase 3b has been sensitively designed to ensure flood risk and water quality is appropriately addressed in accordance with latest regulations.

As part of the new development phase, we will also be launching 10 new house type designs including a mixture of two, three and four-bedroom properties as part of ‘The Story Collection.’

The Story Collection incorporates the best of a Story home in terms of design and elevations to retain the housebuilder’s unique street scenes, and internal layouts to offer modern, open plan living spaces. The new offering includes the four-bedroom ‘Hewson’ and ‘Emmerson’ house types and all of the new products have been named after staff who work for the Carlisle-headquartered business.
