Hands on work experience for Dumfries school leaver

June 2015

School leaver, Kai Abraham is so keen to become a joiner that he arranged to work voluntarily with Story Homes as soon as his school exams were over.

Kai, 17, has just sat his National 5 qualifications at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries and hopes to get the grades he needs to find an apprenticeship. Kai is currently applying for apprenticeships and understands that experience is key when competing against other applicants.

Last year, Kai spent two weeks work experience with Story Homes at the Summerpark development in Dumfries and enjoyed it so much, he has returned for another two weeks.

Kai said: “I got a lot out of the experience last year, so I thought that I would ask again this year. I have spent two weeks working and getting hands-on experience. I have been putting doors and skirting boards on and I now know that this is what I really want to do in the future.

“I have really enjoyed my time at Summerpark again. Everyone has been so friendly and it’s been good working with some of the lads again.”

Barry Mattinson, Site Manager at Story Homes has praised Kai for his initiative and said: “When Kai approached Story Homes we had no hesitation in inviting him back. He really impressed us last year. This year, he has grown in confidence and I can see that he is a much more self-assured lad.”

Story Homes encourages young people into careers in the construction industry and any help we can offer, has to be a benefit for both parties.”

Frank Lincoln, Production Director at Story Homes reiterates Barry’s words: “When I visited site last week, I met Kai and he came across as a very enterprising young man. We have enjoyed having him work with us.

“Story Homes is always delighted to offer help and advice to young people wishing to gain an insight into careers in the construction industry. The business also stands to benefit: with ambitious growth and expansion plans, we need to be forward thinking in our recruitment plans.”

Story Homes is looking to work alongside new contractors and suppliers.
