Summerpark community works together to support new neighbours in need

April 2020

New homeowners Jessica and Stephen Devlin are thanking their neighbours at Summerpark, Dumfries for donating furniture to allow them to move into their new Story home.

The couple, who have retired to Dumfries from Bracknell in Berkshire, had been temporarily living in a holiday-let home until they were able to move into their new Story home at Summerpark this week.

However due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the couple were unable to access any of their furniture or household items which had been in storage since they made the move from Berkshire to Scotland.

Upon hearing of their predicament, Summerpark Sales Executive Amanda made it her mission to help the couple.

Amanda also happens to be a resident herself at the development so thinking quickly, she reached out to the other residents of Summerpark via the community’s Facebook page asking neighbours to donate any spare household items that could be loaned to the Devlins.

The community worked together to provide the new residents with the following items, making their move into the new home possible:

  • Sofa bed and bedding
  • Blow up mattress and bedding
  • TV and stand
  • Deckchairs and a table
  • Bistro table and chairs
  • Lamps
  • Microwave
  • Kettle
  • Toaster
  • Dinner set and cutlery
  • A slow cooker, pots, pans and other cooking equipment
  • Plus other household essentials

Amanda, who even purchased a kettle for the couple herself, worked into the evening collecting all the items from around the development. Along with her daughter, Dannii, she then safely delivered everything to the driveway of Mr & Mrs Devlin, who were thrilled with the support received from their new neighbours.

Amanda Blyth, Sales Executive at Summerpark, said: “As soon as we heard that our customers weren’t able to access any of their furniture, we knew we had to do something right away. I posted on the Summerpark Community Facebook Group asking if anyone was able to loan the customers any household items and the response was fantastic. We made sure we did everything safely, delivering the items to Jessica & Stephen’s driveway for them to collect.”

“As a resident here myself, I know Summerpark has a wonderful sense of community and when one of our neighbours is in need, we do everything that we can to help.”

Mr & Mrs Devlin said: “We had no choice but to leave our temporary accommodation, so we desperately needed to move into our new Story home; but without any furniture or kitchen equipment, we had nowhere to turn. We are so grateful to Amanda and our other neighbours for coming to our rescue and providing us with all this furniture. Everyone has been so kind and friendly, and we would’ve been lost without them.”

What a great example of a community pulling together to help one another in a time of need. Well done team Summerpark!
