Help to Buy explained

July 2021

The Government’s Help to Buy* scheme aims to help buyers who have a deposit of at least 5% to buy a new home up to the value of £600,000.

The government will lend you up to 20% of the value of your new home via an equity loan, so you will only need to secure a 75% mortgage. The equity loan is interest free for five years and you can pay it back at any time or on the sale of your home.

This initiative is available to help all homebuyers, not just first time buyers, to own their own new build home in England.

David and Hayley, residents at Brookwood Park in Kirkham, used Help to Buy to purchase a four-bedroom detached home. David said:  “Buying our home using Help to Buy gave us the opportunity to go up that next step. We are planning our wedding and hope to grow our family – having four good sized bedrooms means that this can be our forever home and we won’t have to consider moving for a long time. We wanted to stay in Kirkham and having a new-build property frees up our time to spend as a family rather than doing any work to the house.”
