College students get work experience at Whins View, High Harrington

July 2022

We partnered with All Together Cumbria to provide two students from the Lakes College in West Cumbria with work experience at our new development, Whins View in High Harrington.

The students got first-hand experience of a live construction site, working with the different trades on the homes that are being built. Both students had expressed an interest in construction work and following their visit, have decided to pursue careers in bricklaying. One of the students, Elliot, said:

“I enjoyed my time on the site, I had thought about working as a bricklayer and now that I’ve experienced it, I know that’s what I want to do when I leave college.”

We are committed to supporting future talent and promoting the diverse career opportunities available in construction. Scott Weston, Site Manager at High Harrington said:

“It was a pleasure having the students working with us, they got to experience first-hand the different trades that are required to run a successful construction site. We’re invested in supporting our future workforce and it was great to hear that the students have both decided to take up a career in bricklaying following their visit.”

The work experience was facilitated by All Together Cumbria, who are focused on creating a positive social change by providing opportunities for local people. Nicola Gorrill, Social Impact Manager for All Together Cumbria said:

“We were really pleased to facilitate the students’ work experience with Story Homes, a member of All Together Cumbria. Part of our focus is on workforce participation, including our neurodiverse communities, and when speaking to Lakes College they had some fantastic students who could take up the opportunity of involving more diverse individuals in work experience.

“This is a great start to a long-lasting relationship with Story Homes and the Lakes College, helping their diverse range of students in accessing meaningful work experience, and one we hope to replicate across our other member businesses.”
